Direct Investment Department
Direct Investment Department (DID) functions as the equity investment
arm of the Bank. DID is assigned with the responsibility of managing
the Bank’s direct investment activities classified according to
investment objectives as follows:

Strategic Investments - These investments are aimed at
supporting the Bank’s long-term expansion strategies. |

Medium-term Investments - The objective of these investments is
to earn a sustainable stream of dividends and to liquidate and
realize capital gains upon maturity. |

Short-term Investments - These are trading investments aimed at
earning capital gains. |
 |
Specialized Funds - Asset management vehicles, which provide
opportunity for KFH clients to co-invest with the Bank. |
 |
Equity portfolio management – Managing equity portfolio on
behalf of clients. |
DID employs a professional investment team capable of undertaking all
direct investment related activities of the Bank, including investment
screening, financial due diligence, acquisition management,
syndication and post acquisition monitoring of its investment
portfolio. Current investment holdings of DID exceeds US$ 800 million,
and they are diversified into many sectors, including commercial
banking, investment & leasing, real estate, IT, healthcare and asset
management services and others.
DID is active in the ‘buyout’ market and seeks to acquire conventional
businesses and restructure them to make their operations Shari’a
compliant.
Following are some the Department accomplishments during the latest
period:

Expansion
of Banking operations to include Bahrain, Turkey, Malaysia,
Oman, and United Arab Emirates. |

Participated in establishing the first Islamic Insurance Company
( Ta’meen Takafoly). |
 |
Shifting
and restructuring of Alsharqa National Bank from conventional
Banking to Islamic Banking. |
 |
Participated in Kuwait privatization program through ALAFCO for
aviation leasing. |
 |
Investing
in Health Care sector through acquiring stakes in Al Salaam
Hospital. |
 |
Establishment of a holding company for the purpose of expanding
the industrial and services sector. |
The department aims to look
for other investment opportunities and in the process of studying
other regional and geographic expansions of the Islamic Financial
Services.
